Guernsey businesses to display 'breastfeeding welcome' signs

The Health Improvement Commission is extending the Breastfeeding Welcome Scheme into Bailiwick cafés, restaurants and supermarkets.

The Breastfeeding Welcome Scheme launched in 2018, with many States of Guernsey buildings putting up signs inviting mothers to feed their infant how and where they choose.

The Health Improvement Commission is now inviting restaurants, shops and supermarkets to sign up to become Breastfeeding Welcome member venues.

These establishments will display signs welcoming breastfeeding and train staff to support mothers.

The Commission hopes this will normalise breastfeeding in the community and support the wellbeing of both mums and their child.

The World Health Organisation says breastfeeding is the optimal way to provide an infant with the nutrients they need for healthy growth - reducing the risk of infections and likelihood of developing childhood diabetes.

The WHO's research also shows breastfeeding mothers have a reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancers.

Nurse Caroline Hoar, from the Health Improvement Commission, says she is proud to support the scheme.

"This initiative not only promotes the health and well-being of both mothers and infants but also fosters a community where breastfeeding is respected and encouraged.

By creating welcoming environments, we empower mothers to provide the best start for their children, knowing they have the support and understanding of their community.”

Crepe Maison director Natalia Silvester says mothers should feel comfortable caring for their child.

“As a mother and a business owner, I am deeply committed to supporting breastfeeding in our community.

Breastfeeding is a natural and important part of life, and we are proud to be part of a scheme that promotes this essential practice.

By joining the Breastfeeding Welcome scheme, we hope to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all families.”
