Guernsey cyclists in western France charity ride

53 cyclists and 10 support staff enjoy a week in the saddle in Brittany to raise money for island charities.

The fifth Only Fools and Donkeys charity ride takes cyclists from St Malo to Saint Nazaire and back.

The group left Government House on Saturday (8 June) accompanied by two, side by side trikes.

One of these was bought by Only Fools following their 2022 ride. The charity is keen to support accessibility initiatives.

Frankie Middleton is one of the 'peloton.' She says Only Fools has given to numerous Guernsey charities since its first group ride, 10 years ago:

"They raise money for Le Murier School, sponsorship for the Everest Challenge, for example. They purchased and fitted a professional kitchen for the school. Adults and children with learning disabilities are the focus of a lot of their work."

Cyclists choose the distance that want to cycle each day, either 100, 80 or 50 miles. Frankie is going for the longest option:

"We ride in about groups of eight. I felt I needed a new challenge. I cycle quite a lot, I cycle to commute, I cycle for sport. I needed something to keep me interested in cycling."

The logistics of getting the riders together to eat and sleep each night are complicated, hence taking along 10 support staff.

The ride begins and ends in St Malo and passes through Mont St Michel, Vitre, Nantes, St Nazaire and Rennes.
