Guernsey Deportees' stories immortalised in a new podcast

Historians and members of Guernsey's wartime generation have collaborated on a new podcast, to mark the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of the internment camp known as Biberach.

The six-part audio series, called The Guernsey Deportees, is available to stream for free on multiple platforms from today (23 April).

It has been produced by Ollie Guillou, who was inspired by his grandmother, Jill Chubb.

Aged three, Jill was one of the thousand islanders sent to Biberach during World War Two.

She survived and is now the Chair of the Guernsey Deportees Association.

Ollie hopes the project will encourage other families to share stories.

"A lot of people think grandparents have got nothing left to say, and that is not true, there is a rich history to share, if only someone would ask them about it.

"These stories need to be shared more readily throughout the history lessons of Guernsey, so that everyone can share in that story and understand this piece of wartime resilience that is often forgotten."

Ollie says his grandmother has returned to Biberach since to 'face what she went through'.

He says her ability to forgive the people of Germany is inspirational, and she remembers how that forgiveness journey began.

"She went to Majorca for a wedding, and this baby took a real liking to her and kept glancing over to her the whole time.

"At some point, she went over to the couple, and they asked if she could hold the baby.

"It was only then that she discovered that they were a German couple. And in that moment that she realised that this baby and that couple were not to blame for everything that she went through, because she had hated the Germans.

"But she realised that she couldn’t just hold onto that hatred, and just hate all Germans, because it wasn’t the fault of the upcoming generation - they didn’t do this to her, and I think that’s just such a powerful story

"I think that moment led her very much on this journey to come to accept what happened and to be able to speak about it."

The podcast also features two other deportees, Ralph Godwin and Janet de Santos, and two historians, Dr Gilly Carr and Matthew Lucas.
