Guernsey Electricity To The Rescue?

The SEL power station in Sark.

Utility says it could provide power to Sark if asked by the States of Guernsey.

Following a large number of Sark residents refusing to pay, what they describe as, an excessive electricity price of 85p per unit, Guernsey Electricity has said it could be available to help with power if the situation requires.

A public meeting was held on Thursday 28 November called by the owners of Sark Electricity to put forward reasons for the current charge and explain options for the future. The Sark Electricity Users Group says there was standing room only at the Island Hall but there was anger and frustration at what was said and a handful of the audience walked out in disgust.

Subsequently the group collected 98 signatures and sent them to the directors of the utility expressing their concern.

SEUG says they believe this support, gathered under pressure of time, reflects the level of fear, dissatisfaction and even restrained anger felt by many Sark residents and their frustration at the inadequate level of clarity provided by Sark Electricity Limited.

The utility is in dispute with the price control commissioner over what is a fair rate to charge. The commissioner is recommending a charge per unit of 53p compared to SEL's price of 85p

Andy Cook from SEUG says it appears the the utility's director David Gordon-Brown wants to recoup the shareholders legal costs from action taken against the authorities through the charge to islanders. He believes there is no reason why residents should be expected to pay this.
