Guernsey Firefighters issue E-Bike warning after house fire

Guernsey Fire and Rescue were called to a house fire in the Vale around 4 o'clock this morning (11 December).

Firefighters spent around an hour on scene at Rue Flere.

The crew says a working smoke detector alerted the family to the fire in the early hours, allowing everyone to escape without injury.

Although the investigation is ongoing, the service has issued an electric bike warning on social media.

It says while E-bikes offer an environmentally-friendly and convenient mode of transport, they can be unsafe if their batteries are charged or stored incorrectly.

Guernsey Fire & Rescue Service shared these do's and don'ts to keep you and your household safe:

✅ Do purchase your e-bike and parts from trusted sellers, avoiding rogue, untrustworthy online retailers

✅ Do only use the correct charger for your battery, as connecting the wrong charger to a battery can pose serious fire risks

✅ Do unplug your charger when fully charged and keep it in a cool place

✅ Do stop using your charger or battery immediately if it overheats, deforms, makes a hissing/cracking noise, smells, smokes or performs poorly

❌ Don't leave your device charging unattended or when you are asleep

❌ Don't charge or store your battery where it could block escape routes

❌ Don't cover the charger or battery

❌ Don't modify or tamper with your battery
