Jessie de Garis founded Floraville School for Handicapped Children in 1948.

The scheme recognises people from the past who made significant contributions during their lifetime.

Jessie transformed the lives of hundreds of vulnerable young people.

In her memory, a Blue Plaque has been unveiled in Vauvert (11 February).

Five children started on the school's first day, 9 November 1948, marking the start of Special Education provision in Guernsey.

Jessie later became headteacher of Valnord School until she resigned in 1976 to become Guernsey’s first full-time Educational Psychologist.

The plaque is displayed on Floraville in Vauvert, originally two houses joined together by the Guernsey primary school.
