Guernsey's mail to be delivered by boat

Guernsey Post has brokered a deal to ensure the island's two major gift card companies, and other exporters, keep their access to an aircraft for outgoing mail - but our inbound post and parcels will come by boat.

The mail plane service, operated in conjunction with the Royal Mail, will end on Friday 4 April but the new service will take over on Monday 7 April.

Guernsey Post says that the identity of the new operator is currently commercially sensitive, but it confirmed that it will run at ATR 72 aircraft to get the mail to East Midlands each weekday night.

Fast access to the UK postal system is seen as essential for the two major fulfilment companies based in Guernsey, Moonpig and Funky Pigeon Cards.

Jersey lost its mail plane service in 2023.

Guernsey Post's Chief Executive Steve Sheridan says exporters should find the transition between operators seamless:

“There is no change to the current arrangements in that everything that is exported by air now will continue, this includes general mail and special delivery items.

"Our unique bulk mail export requirements have allowed us to establish a commercially viable solution to enable us to continue to provide this service.

"The aircraft solution maintains the current load capacity at 6 tonnes."

What will change in the spring is the delivery of all of Guernsey's inbound mail by boat.

Royal Mail says using a sea delivery service to Guernsey will bring the system to the Crown Dependencies in line. The move is based around shrinking letter post volumes and targets to minimise carbon emissions.
