The transformation of the kiosk and changing rooms is one step closer after the States of Guernsey signed a deal with the charity that will do the work.

The lease agreement between the States and Vive Le Vallette means the redevelopment of La Vallette bathing pool in St Peter Port can move forward.

The estimated £1.5 million project will see the kiosk and changing rooms modernised for the benefit of swimmers, and for wider community use by sports, arts and other groups.

David Warr, Chair of Vive La Vallette charity says it is a significant moment:

"This agreement is very good news indeed. It means we can now press on and get on site. But first of all we need to appoint a local building company to take the project on. We are in advanced negotiations with one particular party and we're hopeful we can get on site before the end of the year.  We have to be mindful of the current tenant of the kiosk and we have spoken with her, as have the States of Guernsey. But now having all the legals in place we can begin the real work.'

Our plan is to keep the base of the building but improve the facilities by putting in new showers. On top, we will be removing the existing kiosk and replacing it with a covered cafe area with seating that can also be a function area for groups or individuals to use.

While we want to respect the many swimmers who use La Vallette we also want to attract people from the broader community who may have different interests with a particular emphasis on health and well-being."

Vive La Vallette was named the preferred party for La Vallette site in May 2019 following a consultation in which the community was invited to say  what could and should be done to make the best use of all six sites.

The States of Guernsey has committed £300,000 to the project, with the rest coming from private sector support and donations.  More than half the money has been secured, and fundraising will continue for the rest.

The States will also do one off works in addition to the regular maintenance of the Ladies' and Childrens' pools to improve the pool surround.

It is hoped work will begin on-site later this year.
