Business premises should take steps to prevent legionella when re-opening.
The Health & Safety Executive is reminding businesses who may be reopening their premises after several weeks of closure that they should take steps to ensure their water is clean as legionella bacteria may have built up while the premises have been unattended.
This involves thoroughly flushing and running water from any outlets, and cleaning those outlets (particularly taps and shower heads) and if you are unsure if your water system is safe, contact a water engineer.
Legionella bacteria can cause Legionnaire’s Disease, a potentially deadly respiratory disease.
Similarly businesses should take care that they are safely switching heating or electricity back on.
If businesses need further advice on re-opening safely, they can find it on https://gov.gg/legionella and they can contact hse@gov.gg.
