Public Holiday For King's Coronation Makes ‘Four-Day Weekend’

The date chosen to celebrate the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III precedes Guernsey’s Liberation day, making a four-day weekend.

Islanders can celebrate the crowning of the new King, with an additional public holiday on Monday 8 May 2023.

The official ceremony takes place in London the weekend before (Saturday 6 May).

President of The Committee for Economic Development, Deputy Neil Inder, says the date of the additional public holiday maximises celebrations on the island:

"In view of the special relationship that the island has with the Crown, we can announce an additional public holiday to celebrate the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III.

This public holiday will take place on 8th May immediately preceding Liberation Day which will effectively provide a four-day weekend."

Multiple businesses and parish officials were consulted on this decision and agreed the Coronation is a special event that should be properly recognised.

The UK government announced last week that it would be making 8 May a bank holiday for the Coronation.
