Two Guernsey residents receive New Years Honours

Deputy Lyndon Trott is awarded an OBE for services to Guernsey while Michael Chapple is awarded the British Empire Medal for services to Youth Sailing in the island.

Guernsey's most senior politician, deputy Lyndon Trott, was first elected 25 years ago and is now one of the island's longest-serving politicians.

In that time he has held the position of Treasury lead, Chief Minister and now the head of Policy and Resources.

He was elected Chief Minister in 2008 just ahead of the global financial crash.

Among his many achievements are securing multiple tax exchange agreements ahead of a crucial G20 summit, to ensure Guernsey stayed on the whitelist of financial services centres.

He was also instrumental in ensuring fuel supply ships were bought by Guernsey to avoid any disruption to imports.

Lyndon Trott gives his time for free in his role as a director of Guernsey Finance. He is an Independent Trustee of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Trust Fund, again an unpaid position.

He began his professional career in Guernsey's finance industry, then left to join his father's commercial fishing business, before becoming a politician.

Deputy Trott says he is grateful for the honour.

"I hope this adds to the recognition for Guernsey‘s government as a whole and to the jurisdiction's reputation for professionalism, stability and security, which is what we have been known for over my long career in politics.

This award comes at a time when many people are frustrated with the political process and I share those frustrations.

Our public finances remain unbalanced, and the cost of living rises have made life harder for many people and we are still investing far too little in our island and economy.

While I am very grateful to receive this honour, my focus remains on the very big workload that we have to get through in the remaining months of this political term."

He recounts the moment Lieutenant General Richard John Cripwell told him he was part of the 2025 New Year Honours List

"I got a phone call to go up to Government House, which I do quite regularly, because I have meetings with His Excellency on a fairly frequent basis. I had no idea as to the context.

He sat me in his office and came straight out with it, and I think it’s fair to say I was absolutely gobsmacked."

Michael Chapple, has been awarded the British Empire Medal for services to Youth Sailing in Guernsey.

Mike has spent the past 30 years volunteering as a dinghy racing coach.

His interest in passing on his expertise began with his children, but he soon began coaching budding primary school sailors.

This led him to realise that sailing needed to be taught to younger children, so he began the 'Pirates on the Pond' initiative at the Model Yacht Pond for children aged five and upwards.

Mike Chapple is dedicated to nurturing sailing expertise and has given his time and money selflessly, over decades, to get the best out of Guernsey's star sailors.

He says the sport helps develop critical thinking.

"It gives the opportunity to be on your own, be resourceful, resilient and it is unparalleled in that respect.

It is of course an outdoor sport and gives the children the opportunity to extend their mental and physical prowess and to combat the natural elements.

Over the years I have been blessed with coaching some very hard-working and dedicated children who have gone on to achieve quite a good degree of success. It is a passion and is incredibly rewarding.

I know that my late wife, Liz, who died 15 years ago, would have been absolutely proud."
