Alderney's population is expected to double during Alderney Week, which begins in early August, as the Bailiwick's biggest carnival gets underway.

Alderney Week dates back to 1948 and is host to hundreds of activities every year.

This year’s theme is "Step back in time."

Organiser Wayne Chandler says the traditional events will be complimented by some themed surprises.

"We are not going to let too much go at the minute, but we have got some retro game shows and things people will want to join in.

We are going back to the 80s and 70s for some bits and right the way back to 1948 if we can."

He says, as well as being good fun, the festival stimulates the islands' economy.

"This is how we are able to attract most of our tourism.

It keeps all the hotels, restaurants, bars and everyone else in money for the year. So we try and make it as best as we can and get as many people over as we can."

This will be the third year that Wanye and wife Vicky have organised the week.

A few small events are happening over the weekend before, but the official festival begins on Monday 5 August. 

From 1pm, the traditional Cavalcade will travel through Saint Anne and down Victoria Street.

The colourful floats will stop at the Butes where a programme of events will take place throughout the afternoon.

On Tuesday 6 August there will be a fabulous fashion show at the Butes at 11am, and a sandcastle competition at 2pm on Braye Beach.

The Colour Party at Corporation Quarry begins at 5pm on Wednesday, followed by the Gala Night on the Butes at 8pm.

There's a Daft Raft Race at Braye Beach at 10am on Thursday.

Friday begins with the Battle of the Butes at 10am.

Half an hour later there will be quirky competitions, such as the Waiters and Waitresses Race, and the Strong Man and Woman contest.

The last official day of the festival, Saturday 10 August, is packed full of activities.

Islanders will fling themselves into the sea at Braye Beach for the Man-powered Flight competition at 11am.

Youngsters will step into the spotlight at 2pm, for a Junior Talent Show at the Butes.

At 8.45pm, everyone is welcome to join the Torchlight Procession, that will travel from the Island Hall to the Butes.

A bonfire, musical performance and fireworks will make up the grand finale.
