100 Asian Hornet Nests Found

Jersey’s 100th Asian Hornet nest was found in a bramble bush in St Martin.

The number of nests discovered has more than doubled since July.

The 100 found so far this year far exceeds the 63 that were discovered in the entirety of 2021.

This is the first time the milestone has been hit on the island since the invasive species was first discovered in the summer of 2014

The sharp rise in hornets has been blamed on the record breaking hot temperatures the island has experienced this year.

Government teams are urging Islanders to report any suspected sighting of Asian Hornets because they pose a serious threat to honey bees and other insect pollinators.

However, people should not kill a hornet if they see one, as the teams track the insects movements which helps them discover the nests.

You can report suspected sightings of Asian Hornets  by emailing asianhornet@gov.je, calling 441633 or using the Asian Hornet Watch app.
