1000 Jersey Year 5s to attend safety workshops

Over 1000 Jersey Year 5s have been invited to attend safety workshops this week.

This is part of the annual Safety In Action event at Highlands College, running from 8 July - 17 July.

Pupils will be able to attend six workshops covering fire prevention and first aid, as well as kitchen, water, road and outdoor safety.

These lessons are being run by uniformed services, local charities and volunteer organisations.

Co-ordinator of the event, Mandy Le Tensorer, tells us what the students will be learning:

"In first aid, which is led by St John Ambulance, they'll be learning how to put someone in the recovery position, how to raise the alarm.

"In fire prevention, they'll be looking at Plan A and Plan B, which the fire service advocate, learning how to evacuate safety and what to do if you can't when there's a fire.

"Water safety will be looking at rip-tides and their currents and what to do there; kitchen safety will spend a lot of time looking at electrical safety as well as ensuring children understand about other harmful things you can find in the kitchen."
