1210 got Jersey government help to buy an electric car

1210 people received a Jersey government grant of £3,500 to buy an electric vehicle.

The Electric Vehicle Purchase Incentive has closed, and there are no plans to repeat it.

It had been running since August 2023.

The money was from a £4.3 million allocation to help the island reach carbon neutral targets by encouraging people to move away from petrol and diesel vehicles.

Government figures show transport remains the largest source of Jersey's greenhouse gas emissions, at 45%.

EVPI applications were on a first-come, first-served basis.

Deputy Steve Luce, Minister for the Environment, said: “The demand for electric vehicles and the uptake of this incentive scheme was much greater and quicker than initially anticipated.

"I am pleased to see that many Islanders have benefited from receiving a grant of up to £3,500 towards the purchase of a new or used electric vehicle, helping to reduce Jersey’s transport emissions.

“The funds for this incentive were coming to an end when I last made an announcement in October, and as expected the final incentives have now been allocated which naturally draws the scheme to a close.

"This scheme will continue to deliver significant emission reductions for years to come, due to an increase in electric journeys and decrease in petrol and diesel commutes. I would like to thank everyone involved and our approved vehicle retailers who supported the incentive and helped make it so successful.”

Vouchers of £300 or £600 towards an e-bike were scrapped in June 2024. 1,800 vouchers had been given out since the incentive began in January 2023, but less than a third were redeemed.

The remaining £100,000 in the pot was reallocated to help businesses with £4,000 towards the cost of a second hand electric van

Households and small businesses can still apply for £350 towards the installation of an electric vehicle smart charger.
