El Galeon Andalucía will no longer be visiting Jersey after becoming stuck in St Malo with mechanical problems, however, a replacement ship will come to the island instead.
The replacement parts for El Galeon will arrive at the end of this month, so Nao Victoria, a replica of the first ship to circumnavigate earth, will visit Jersey.
Juan Sabastian Elcano commanded her to sail around the world, leaving Saville in 1519 and returning three years later in 1522, under Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan.
Following the Spanish feat, it would be 60 years until Sir Francis Drake completed the same accomplishment.
“And better does Your Majesty know what we must value the most, as we have discovered and sailed around the whole Earth…”
Letter of Juan Sebastián Elcano aboard Nao Victoria, in Sanlúcar, 6 September 1522.
Spain built the replica in 1991 after a long historical research process by Ignacio Fernández Vial, who designed and constructed the ship.
Following the original ship's lead, Nao Victoria became the first replica ship to sail around the globe, taking the same trip from Saville in 2004.
Nearly 27,000 miles were covered from 2004 to 2006, visiting 17 countries.
The ship will sail to Jersey from Boulogne sur Mer, arriving at Albert Pier on Tuesday, 18 July.
Visitors are being welcomed aboard from 19 July to 23 July, and Ports of Jersey will hold a Spanish food festival from Friday, 21 July, to Sunday, 23 July, from midday until 8 pm.
Nao Victoria will leave Jersey on the morning of Monday, 24 July.
