Care Memorial Planned For La Collette

Plans have been submitted for a Care Memorial at La Collette Gardens for survivors of child abuse.

It follows discussions about creating a commemorative area, as recommended by the Jersey Care Inquiry, which exposed decades of abuse in the island's care system.

Original plans included a sculpture at the Weighbridge.

However, this idea was rejected amid concern it could potentially cause trauma for survivors. There were also worries it would be costly.

Instead, the idea became to create a Garden of Reflection, where a raised granite pond will lie at the centre with paths leading to it from the east and west.

Themed around butterflies, the garden's purpose is to be somewhere people can reflect, relax and think.

If the plans are approved, people who visit the area promoting introspection will walk under wooden pergolas shading the trails, to the reflection pond and new bench.

There are also plans to landscape the area to complete the transformation, with all existing foliage, trees and lawns kept as they are.

New plants -  including fragrant roses and jasmine found to decrease stress and improve moods, will be added behind the new arbour seat - a bench with a covering - pergolas and pond.

The new bench will look directly over the Garden of Reflection, out to Havre Des Pas and with a direct view of the mid-winter sunrises.

The plans also account for people using the memorial, as a path leading south will be added on the west of the gardens so it can be avoided if occupied.

The area overlooking St Clement and Greve d'Azette is Grade II listed and is close to the La Collette Barracks, once home to the island's Territorial Army unit.

La Collette Gardens has suffered substantial storm damage in recent months due to Storm Ciaran and the high winds that followed.

In its heyday, it was decorated with sun-tropical plants and was maintained to a high standard.
