Plans for Euro 2024 football fan zone

The Chief Minister has announced plans for a Euro 2024 fan zone for islanders to watch the footballing action together on a big screen.

It is hoped from the knockout stages of the tournament in Germany, an area will be set up for islanders to watch the matches up to the final.

All 'home' teams from across the community - from England to Scotland and Poland to Portugal and others - will be shown.

A location has not been confirmed yet. Last summer chairs and TVs were set up at Liberty Wharf for the Women's World Cup, with pubs allowed to open early for the final between England and Spain.

The Waterfront has also been a past venue for watching major sporting events on a big screen.

Chief Minister Lyndon Farnham was asked in the States Assembly whether a fan zone would be set up and he confirmed there are plans, and the details are being finalised.

"The location is being decided upon and hopefully, an announcement will be made in due course.

"It is intended to be from the knockout stages onwards, but the gamble is if the home teams get that far."

He says the proposal is to show every match until the final and there will be sponsorship from the government and the private sector.

Euro 2024 gets underway on Friday 14 June, with the knockout stages starting on 29 June.  The final is on Sunday 14 July.
