Islanders are being encouraged to suggest ways Jersey can celebrate the 80th anniversary of Liberation Day.

The Bailiff is appealing for people to submit ideas to their parish Constable or deputies, who will then pass them on to a panel that is working up proposals for 9 May 2025.

Sir Timothy Le Cocq wants people to get involved with the how the island's national day is marked:

"I's an extremely important event in the Jersey calendar, but we want to keep it relevant.

The structure of Jersey has changed, the population of Jersey has changed, and we need to make it relevant to the Jersey of today whilst maintaining the values of our history that springboard it."

 Liberation Day is traditionally marked with a re-enactment and Service of Thanksgiving in Liberation Square.

The Bailiff says Liberation 80 is a particularly significant milestone:

"We're approaching a time where there are fewer and fewer people who are going to have any real, vivid memories of liberation, and this is perhaps, from their point of view, the last potentially big celebration of Liberation Day."

Major events for Liberation 75 in 2020 has to be shelved due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with celebrations largely going virtual.

Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II visited Jersey for Liberation 60, and the then Prince of Wales - now King Charles III -  visited for the 50th Anniversary.

Most recently Sophie, the now Duchess of Edinburgh, visit for Liberation 70, when events were staged in People's Park which was the venue for the very first Liberation Day in 1946.

HRH was also in the island for Liberation Day in 2022, along with her husband Prince Edward.
