Initiative Launched To Fill Empty Theatre Seats

People in Jersey who wouldn't normally be able to afford to go to the theatre are now able to purchase tickets at a discounted price.

The Theatre Workshop Jersey is trialling the Empty Seats Initiative as tickets go on sale for their production of Our House The Musical.

Creative Director Scott Livingstone says it will allow more people to experience live theatre.

"You are limiting theatre people who can't afford to bring their families, people who can't afford to see the shows and therefore making theatre not an accessible activity.

We have taken it upon ourselves to try to give back those seats to the community and to anyone who would like to take the opportunity to purchase those tickets at either a heavily reduced price or - if needed - completely for free.

Performing to a small crowd is never enjoyable for the performers. The energy of the room is not there, but also it is just a waste of seats. The seats are there regardless of whether anyone has paid for them, and they're empty if no one has paid for them."

They're hoping it will encourage other companies and productions to follow a similar initiative.
