Jersey tapas bar owner to donate 10% of profits to Spanish flood relief efforts

Paco Lora, who owns Casa Paco, is giving 10% of his takings to charity to help the survivors of the flash floods in Spain.

The restaurateur came up with the idea after he saw the destruction on television with his wife and cousin, Chelo Lora, who have family and friends in Valencia.

The flash floods in eastern Spain have devastated towns, villages and cities - claiming the lives of more than 200 people, with that number expected to grow.

Emergency services and the Spanish Red Cross, Cruz Roja, have been working to evacuate thousands of people, who are being cared for in shelters.

Paco Lora has been watching the tragedy unfold and says he wanted to do something.

"The only way we thought we could help was by doing this.

"I'm 100% sure whatever we do over the weekend, we want to give it to the Red Cross on Monday.

"If people decide to make a different donation, they can make it online. Every little helps, it doesn't matter.  It can be £1, £2, £3...  These people have lost everything."

The owner of Casa Paco continues:

"I've got friends and they've lost absolutely everything. They've lost their business, they've lost their cars.  Everything that is material, you know you can replace with time, but there's been a lot of lives lost as well. It's been quite a disaster."

His cousin Chelo Lora says they still have a lot of family back home in Valencia:

"Seeing the devastation of where we were born, where we were raised, it's still very close to home.

"Given that we couldn't physically volunteer and be there on the ground we thought 'let's try and participate in some way'.

"Regardless of whether we know them or not, we just really feel for everybody, for people who would have been our neighbours in our home towns."

Paco is donating 10% of the restaurant's takings from lunch and dinner bookings on 8 and 9 November to the charity.

The tapas bar, in the Central Market, is also encouraging islanders to donate directly to Cruz Roja online.
