Jersey Woman's Choir Raises £30k For Domestic Abuse Charity

An islander who is part of the London Voices Choir has been telling Channel 103 how it has raised almost £30,000 for the domestic abuse charity, Women's Aid.

The London Voices Choir was due to perform a spring concert in the UK last the weekend, but it was cancelled because of the coronavirus lockdown.

However, they've put all their rehearsal time to good use to raise money for a good cause instead.

One of the choir members, Amber Mezbourian, lives in London but is originally from Jersey.

She took part from her bedroom after her weekend break home became extended indefinitely when the island went into lockdown.

Amber told us all the members recorded their performances from home:

"As a way to maintain a sense of community spirit at this difficult time, 276 members of the choir  - myself included - recorded ourselves singing 'You’ve Got A Friend', which has been made into a video to raise money for Women’s Aid’s Live Chat – a service that is particularly necessary during the lockdown as many women are trapped at home with their abuser.

"I was able to participate in this initiative from my bedroom in Jersey – a great example of technology bringing people in different places together."

Telling us about the song choice, Amber said: "It fits with trying to reach out to people at this time - when you can't see your friends face to face - just reminding people that there is always somebody there."

The money will be used to provide Women's Aid's digital services, providing a vital lifeline to women needing the held of its expert support workers.

You can donate to the choir's fundraiser on their JustGiving page.
