A Jersey veteran has met members of the Royal Family in Portsmouth as part of commemorations to mark D-Day.

100-year old Ernie Thorne has been shaking hands with King Charles as events continue to honour those who served in World War Two.

Jersey's last known surviving hero of the Normandy campaign was spotted in conversation with the monarch as he greeted veterans at the service.

Prince William and Queen Camilla were also on hand in the seaside town, where two historic Dakota military transport planes performed a flypast.

The aircraft were used by troops from the UK, US, and Canada to attack German forces on beaches in northern France.

Speaking at the event, King Charles addressed crowds:

"It is our duty to ensure that we and future generations do not forget their service and their sacrifice in replacing tyranny with freedom.

"Let us once again commit ourselves always to remember, cherish and honour those that served that day and to live up for the freedom that they died for."

Earlier this week, Ernie Thorne was honoured with a portrait at St Helier's townhall.

The 100-year-old was previously honoured with the cross of the Chevalier de l'Ordre National de la Légion in 2018 for his services.

Similarly to when he received that award, when being presented this portrait, Ernie insisted he did little to earn the honour but was extremely grateful:

"I'm the last Jersey survivor of the Normandy campaign.

"As a young Jerseyman, I never thought that one day I would have my portrait painted, but today I have been honoured to receive this painting by Jason Butler.

"So to everyone who was involved in making this happen, I thank you."

It is on permanent display for islanders interested in viewing the painting.
