Jersey's Royal Marines Cadets crowned Britain's best

A group of young islanders have dominated a two-day competition to see which Royal Marines Cadets are the best troops in the British Isles.

The two-day test consists of delivering and implementing a NATO orders sequence, field craft, skill at arms, casualty care, and navigation, and concludes with the gruelling Royal Marines endurance test.

Every year, each area of the Sea Cadet Corps puts forward the best Royal Marines Cadet detachment to join the competition.

There are 500 detachments in the British Isles, across six areas, and Jersey's troops were chosen to represent the Zulu Coy Southern area team.

After six months of vigorous training from Sergeant Nick Skelhorn and Sergeant Craig Norris, the team headed to the UK and arrived at CTC Lympstone on the evening of Liberation Day.

The cadets then flew to the Commando Training Centre at Woodbury Common, in Devon, by Merlin helicopter to participate in the Gibraltar Cup.

Lieutenant (SCC) David Thompson says they are very proud of the Jersey Gibraltar Cup team.

"They had put a huge amount of effort into preparing for the challenge and entered the competition with a true commando spirit.

"I would like to thank the committed team of adult volunteers who trained, supported and travelled over to the UK with the team.

"This is a great win for the unit on the 75th anniversary of providing maritime youth training on Jersey."

The Jersey Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets are the largest corp in the British Isles and Commonwealth with a crew of over 200.

It is also celebrating its 75th Anniversary this year with a reception at Government House on 15 June, in the presence of Jersey's Lieutenant Governor, Vice Admiral Jerry Kyd.

Ex-Cadets and Adult Volunteers are also invited to join in on marking the occasion from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
