Large sculpture made of islanders' shirts to be created in St Helier

Today is the final day for islanders to donate their shirts to be included in a large scale art installation in St Helier.

The project will be displayed across St Helier's high street and will be made up of 600 shirts, donated by the island community.

It's called 'Dancing Together', and has been created by ArtHouse Jersey and Finnish artist Kaarina Kaikkonen as part of the Butterfield Art Public Series.

Those who want to take part have until the end of the day (5 August) to drop off their shirts to one of the collection points around the island.

These include:

• Ransoms Garden Centre, 9am to 6pm

• Citizens Advice Jersey, 10am to 3pm

• Jersey Library, 9am to 7pm, 9am to 5:30pm

• St Brelade Communicare Library, 9am to 1pm & 2pm to 5:30pm

• Mind Jersey Drop-In Centre, 10am – 4pm

• Butterfield at the IFC6, 9am to 5pm

• St Helier Town Church, 9am to 6:00pm

Some donations and accompanying stories submitted to the project

ArtHouse Jersey is also looking for donations with a story and is looking for people to submit shirts that may have sentimental value to them.

So far, shirts have been submitted telling a variety of tales on the island.

Arthouse Jersey Director Tom Dingle tells us some of his favourites:

"We have had a range of memories and stories that have come with the shirts from people donating items of clothing from someone who has departed.

"We've got garments from islanders who used to wear them but have then gone on a fitness journey and lost a lot of weight.

"Equally, we have had one or two where people have said- 'this is my ex partner's shirt and I don't want it anymore!"

The artwork will be installed in mid–August and will be on display until mid-October.

It will then be moved to the ArtHouse Jersey exhibition space at Capital House where it will be open to the public from 7 November.

Here islanders can come and read the stories behind the shirts islanders have donated.
