New Book To Encourage Bus Travel

LibertyBus have created a new storybook to encourage young islanders with disabilities to travel independently.

‘The Amazing Journey: Liberty Explores Jersey By Bus’ follows the journey of Liberty the cow as she travels to the likes of Coronation Park, Mount Orgueil Castle and Jersey Zoo.

It also features Liberty’s cousin Daisy who has autism.

The book was written by LibertyBus Marketing and Communications Manager Lisa Walker.

“We just thought that a storybook like this which brought some of our key messages to life was a really good idea.

“They wrote one in Guernsey which featured a puffin because their travel pass is called a puffin pass. We wanted the same idea in Jersey, so we thought Liberty the Cow was a great idea.”

The book has been illustrated by the Jersey Mencap Taking Part Making Art group and their tutor Catherine Seal.

It forms part of a travel programme run by the company.

“We talk about different ways of paying for the bus, how to call the bus, behaviour on the bus and then some basic road safety messages as well. When you get off the bus, don’t cross the road in front of the bus and things like that.

“It’s about building their confidence and if we can get someone who normally wouldn’t be able to travel independently if the bus can give them independence then that’s great for us.”

The books are on sale from Liberation Station, the Autism Jersey main reception and boutique, Beresford Street Kitchen and Acorn for £3 with all proceeds going to Autism Jersey and Jersey Mencap.
