New States Vet Appointed

A vet with more than 30 years of experience has been appointed Jersey's new Chief Veterinary Officer.

Alistair Breed replaces Brian Smith, who filled the role temporarily last May until a permanent replacement was found.

Mr. Breed arrives from the Isle of Man where he held the same position. He qualified as a veterinary surgeon from the University of Liverpool in 1984 spent the first half of his career in private veterinary medicine.

"I have travelled to Jersey on business several times over many years and I’ve always enjoyed my visits to the Island. I have a long experience of living on a small island and I’m delighted that I now have the opportunity to live and work in Jersey.

"I look forward to getting to know the Island and its people better and working to help to safeguard and improve the quality of life for people and animals."

The government says he is familiar with the relationship between the Crown Dependencies and the UK, which will be beneficial when working as part of a team taking Jersey through the Brexit process.

"I’m delighted that Alistair, who has a wealth of experience, has joined the department at such an exciting and fast-moving time. His previous practical, private work along with his long-standing career in Government veterinary service, makes him extremely well-suited to Jersey’s requirements for a Chief Veterinary Officer.”

"I would also like to take the opportunity to thank Brian, a safe and reliable pair of hands, who since May last year has worked very diligently to keep us on track in local and international matters." - Willie Peggie, Director of Natural Environment.
