The Chair of the Privileges and Procedures Committee has hit back at comments from a Jersey politician the Assembly needs to get its 'act together'.

The claims follow a perceived dry spell in propositions being lodged, with only 70 coming through the Assembly for debate so far this year, the lowest number recorded in decades.

Despite Constable Karen Shenton-Stone calling the number worrying, she says Deputy Andrews' assertion that is down to a lack of effort are 'ridiculous' and 'short-sighted'.

"It's not very kind or nice to just sit there and criticise all of your States colleagues with some sweeping statement that has absolutely no basis in truth."

St Helier's Deputy Andrews wants politicians to lodge more proposals, arguing that it is a backbenchers job to provoke debate.

"I think that's important, as you're holding Ministers to account."

PPC Chair Karen Shenton-Stone says there is a lot more to States Members' work than putting in propositions.

"It's not a question of how many propositions each member puts in, I mean it's easy if we all sit back and think up propositions and put them in.

"It's quality rather than quantity."

When speaking to Channel 103 previously, Deputy Max Andrews spoke about 'time-wasting' in the States Assembly.

He mentioned that government officers making mistakes in reports can contribute, with corrections leading to members running out of time to bring their proposals to the States.

Deputy Andrews says you have to be considerate of the States Assembly's time.

"Certain proposals are probably better lodged by executive members as you have an army of civil servants behind you.

Constable Karen Shenton-Stone views 'time-wasting' differently.

"What about the waste of time and effort of States Members who've read the propositions and the officers who've helped to put together the propositions and then find out that this particular member has withdrawn seven of them?"

Deputy Max Andrews has withdrawn eight proposals from January 2023 to October 2024.
