'School Street' Scheme Extended

The 'school street' scheme at St Luke's Primary has been extended until the end of term in July.

It sees Elizabeth Street closed between 7.30am -9.30am and 2.30pm - 4.30pm.

The aim is to encourage more pupils to walk or cycle to school.

In a video posted online, pupils say they think it's a good idea.

"It's safer to walk to school without any cars going down the lane.

It's better because it's healthier for us instead of using the car all the time."

Headteacher Adam Turner says the scheme has done its job.

"It was heartening to see it doing exactly what we'd planned. So children and parents were waiting at the gates but not being worried about falling off the very narrow pavement.

They were laughing and playing as they waited without any worries at all."

The scheme will now run until 21 July.
