Smoke alarm prevents serious fire just hours after JFRS warning

A smoke alarm has prevented serious damage to a home in Jersey just a week before Christmas.

Two fire engines responded to a call at 6.30am on Wednesday (18 December) reporting flames coming from a cupboard housing a boiler.

Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the property and put out the small fire in the airing cupboard.

Crews say the smoke detector undoubtedly saved those in the property from harm.

It came just hours after Jersey Fire and Rescue had used its social media to warn that we are ten times more likely to die from a fire if we don't have a working alarm.

Results of the 2024 Opinions and Lifestyle Survey revealed only 19% of Jersey households said they test their smoke alarms each month.

Worryingly, 13% of people said they never test their smoke alarms.

A JFRS spokesperson said:

"If you struggling for a gift for a friend or relative this Christmas, buy them something that could save their life and get them a smoke alarm.

"Working smoke alarms save lives!"
