Book by Jersey schoolchildren launches on World Book Day

'The Jersey Files' is based on Jersey folklore, myths, and legends.

A collection of spooky short stories written by budding young Jersey authors has been published on World Book Day.

'The Jersey Files' is collectively written by pupils from Le Rocquier, Grainville, Les Quennevais, Jersey College for Girls and Victoria College.

The stories were created and written in school workshops with award-winning author Peter J Murray, and are inspired by Jersey’s myths and legends.

Gemma Sutherland, Assistant Head Teacher at Le Rocquier told Channel 103:

"We worked with Peter J Murray. He wrote a book about the Isle of Wight, and it was all about their spooky ghost stories.

"We asked him if he would write one about Jersey. We took it further, and our students have written short stories about Jersey, about our ghost stories, our folklore, our heritage, and Peter J Murray has edited them

"It's being published on World Book Day by Medina publishing, and we have 'The Jersey Files'.

The book was created through workshops with award-winning author Peter J Murray

"The students were really excited. I don't think they really believed us at the beginning and they just thought it was the class English teachers trying to get them to work harder. But it was really exciting.

"Once they did their first draft of the stories, Peter J Murray worked with them on the editing process, so they were able to work with the author about what it really means to be a writer, how to kind of get the best out of your story.

"I think they're quite nervous for the big book launch on Thursday, but it's really exciting for such young people to be published and part of such a big event; it's a massive deal.

"The fact that the pupils really got behind the project, have really enjoyed reading, and then taken even further by writing as really fills us with pride."

The book launches on Thursday 6 March (World Book Day) and is available to buy from Friday 7 March.
