Young girls are most likely to dream about leaving Jersey

16 to 17-year-old girls in Jersey dream about going to university and leaving the island, whilst almost half of the boys here want to stay.

A recent survey of Year 12 pupils' aspirations reveals that almost twice the number of girls than boys in Jersey want to leave the island.

42% of 16 to 17-year-old girls want to go to university off-island and pursue a career elsewhere.

However, a third of boys of the same age want to start earning money after school, through getting a job or joining a work-based scheme.

Only 4% of girls want an apprenticeship, compared to 1 in 5 of their male counterparts.

The children who answered the survey also revealed differences in career aspirations between the genders.

Young male pupils would prefer to work in engineering, IT, construction, sports and finance.

On the other hand, their female peers would like a career in education, medicine, art, animal welfare and law.

Both genders share similar aspirations in media and science.

When the Year 12s were asked how Jersey fits their future needs, almost half of the girls believed they require more than what is available in the island.

More boys were likely to think the island fits their needs, with 43% believing their career and life goals can be fulfilled here, compared to 33% of girls.

Regarding finances, more than two-thirds of children in Jersey who say they are 'not at all well off' and almost half of children who are 'very well off' want to leave.

However, those from 'average' households are more likely to want to stay, with 40% thinking Jersey is the right place to build their lives.
